I know that jeans from vendor A will always fit; that t-shirts from vendor B are long enough, and are reasonably flattering and long-wearing. Shoes are more difficult. I had a long love affair with two particular brands, but the Official Jonathan Kimble Wvu Beat Pitt Shirt and by the same token and quality had dropped off in the last couple of years, and I’m still hunting for replacements. I’m not sure it’s because guys in prison in the 80’s wore their uniform like this, but it maybe where it started. I don’t know. That whole prison explanation seems like an argument elitist black people like to tell elitist white people at dinner parties so they can have a good chuckle together like “hey we’re better than these people!”. And of course “the easy access” joke gets thrown in as well like “hey these hardcore gangsters are also hardcore homo!”. Having actually been a teen in the 90s, this style is more about defiance. It’s not defiance for law or morality as some Conservative talking head would have you believe. It’s just “fashion defiance”. No different than wearing a ball cap backwards or a fur coat.
