Shirt dresses are a summer staple—but, with a bit of thought, they can work just as well in the fall season. Allow Margot Robbie to demonstrate just how to adapt this style for the coming colder months. This week, the actress hit the streets of New York City wearing a stealthy-chic take on the trend. Robbie's almond Mille's Jasmine dress — which retails for $236 — gave off an elevated yet casual vibe. With its buttoned-up detailing, long sleeves, and below-the-knee hemline, the piece offered just the right amount of coverage for fall. She kept the ensemble neutral all over by picking accessories that matched the dress's colorway, styling it with Loeffler Randall's below-the-knee Gia boots with a thick block heel, a brown leather shopper bag, subtle gold jewelry, and thick tortoise-print sunglasses.
The collection was not limited to print. Some of its primary colors were imported into the plain pants (wider, high rise, single- to triple-pleat) and jackets often used as accents to their vibrancy. There was also an undertow of attractive checked suiting, cut narrowish, straight, and long, and some attractive dimpled heavy seersucker combat pants and field jackets in navy, olive, and sand. However, as the models walked the finale of a collection entitled Ocean to "Octopus's Garden" by the Beatles, it was hard to conclude that the star this afternoon was anything but the Hawaiian shirt and its similarly printed Paul Smith cousins. What did he think was the secret of the garment's enduring and resurgent popularity. "Well," said Smith: "firstly it's an easy shirt to wear. And we are coming out of a period of skinny, body-hugging clothes in general. With a wider higher rise pant it looks good to wear a shirt out over it. But it's just a summer shirt, really. I suppose, in a way we shouldn't really use the word Hawaiian." Oh no. Don't say that now—it's the last day of the season!
At the risk of sounding dramatic, I've been waiting for this Etro striped long-sleeve shirt to go on sale for nearly a year. Ever since I saw the parade of models at Etro's spring ‘20 show in Milan wearing these perfectly ruffled mens long-sleeve striped shirts paired with paisley jeans, they've had my heart. I'm not a particularly preppy dresser, which is what someone might think if I happened to mention my love for these monogrammed button downs in casual conversation, but there was something in the timelessness and ease of them that captured my attention because, let's be honest, what I lack in preppiness I make up for in laziness. I love a uniform and have spent years trying to perfect my own. I've been tempted by things that might have thrown me off course in the past–a sparkly mini skirt that seemed like so much fun but ended up sitting in the back of my closet or a cropped sweater that I never really found mustered up the guts to wear.
